The Office of Student Services exists to help students adjust to college life, to assist in co-curricular concerns, and to aid in the selection of careers and lifetime goals.

Among the functions of this office are academic counseling, testing, new student orientation, student activities and wellness events, student conduct, college success skills courses, disability services, career services, student support services, and service learning.

 


Testing Services

The Testing Center supports the college goal of providing quality student services that are responsive to the needs of current and prospective students. The Testing Center coordinates testing services for new and continuing students, which include placement, video, web, make-up tests, and other course and program assessments.

 


Career Services

Transfer Services

MECC’s Transfer Services assists students who wish to pursue their education beyond the Associates degree. Services include one on one advising sessions, transfer fairs, course equivalency planning, campus visits, as well as assistance with college applications. Disability Services

Great Expectations

Mission Statement for Great Expectations:

 To help Virginia’s foster youth to complete high school, gain access to a community college education, earn a Postsecondary educational credential, and transition successfully to independence which includes a career with a family sustaining wage.

Great Expectations offers educational and supportive services to youth ages 13-24 who are or were in foster /kinship/special needs adoptive relationships to help them achieve academic, independent and personal success. Youth in the Great Expectations program develop career and personal goals. Career goals include the opportunity to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate. The Great Expectations Career Coach offers support and guidance to youth, helping them succeed, not only with college plans and independent living skills, but with their futures.

Center for Student Outreach and Success (SOS)

The Center for Student Outreach and Success (SOS) is intended to increase student persistence and attainment of success. College Success Coaches empower students to achieve their educational goals by providing them with encouragement and support, identifying on and off campus resources, and by collaborating with faculty and staff to identify and reduce barriers to success. We offer a laptop loaner program, TI-84+ calculator loaner program, and other assistance. Unexpected Financial Emergency Assistance

This program is designed to help students stay in college when faced with an unforeseen financial emergency. Through this program, students may receive financial assistance to get them through their emergency.  Eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0, not be a first semester student, and be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.  In order to determine eligibility and if need meets approved criteria, students seeking assistance should contact Student Services at 276-523-9107 or Student Services Suite of Holton Hall.

 


Student Conduct

The general philosophy of Mountain Empire Community College in the area of student conduct is based upon the concept that students are adults and should enjoy the rights and responsibilities of adult citizenship. Accordingly, the State Board for Community Colleges and Mountain Empire Community College have established regulations that are essential to the protection of freedom, life, and property of all members of the campus community.
